This week marks the one year anniversary for Darkfall Unholy Wars. To celebrate, we’ve organized an extended party weekend between May 1st and May 5th. During this time everyone’s invited to play Darkfall Unholy Wars for free and to participate in Anniversary activities – whether you’re a returning player or someone who has never tried it before. The Year in Review
 It has been an exciting year, full of challenges to stay true to our vision for Darkfall Unholy Wars as a leading sandbox PvP MMOPRG featuring the most epic massive battles. After a few setbacks we’re back on track and committed on delivering features and content true to the vision:
Player and Clan Markets reinforced our player driven economy. The new Duel System was celebrated by the first of many Official Tournaments.  The new Territory Control System has clans competing for political and strategic power. Spanning 51 content patches over the past year we’ve given our players features, systems, and content to be excited about, including new roles and schools to experience, new dungeons to explore, new ships to maneuver, environmental enhancements to immerse themselves in the world and much more.
We are committed to following up with regular content patches featuring important additions, including the new Custom Role System, the Alignment System and Siege Engines.

Our latest patch
Keeping on course in our current patch we’ve implemented Armor Dyes and the new Mentor System:
The Mentor System is designed to help new players make it through the first few hours of Darkfall Unholy Wars by pairing them up with an experienced veteran. Mentors are rewarded through prowess points and the opportunity to recruit new talent ahead of the competition.  The game benefits from the new blood.
Armor Dyes help create a distinguished look for your characters, and for clans to sport their own team colors in battles. There are 30 different colors to choose from. More will be added.  For more details on armor dyes, click here.
We invite you to test the new content and to bring your friends using the three buddy keys that you are entitled to with your active subscription. Here are the details how.

In the next few days we have planned several fun activities for our community:
Return or try out Darkfall Unholy Wars for free between May 1st and May 5th
To get you started, we will gift you with Double Prowess points during the whole event. Moreover, we have arranged a series of dynamic happenings that will start with a Treasure Hunt event and will continue with GM controlled monsters in various locations.
And should you like to have a constant daily reminder of Darkfall Unholy Wars on your PC when you are not roaming the lands of Agon, we have prepared a bundle of artwork images that you can use as a desktop.

Anniversary - Play Darkfall FREE from May 1st ~ May 5th

We have organized an extended anniversary party weekend between May 1st and May 5th. During these days everyone is invited to play Darkfall Unholy Wars for free – whether you are a returning player who wants to experience our new features or someone who has never tried it before. New players will benefit from the mentor system, learning all about Darkfall Unholy Wars with the help of the veterans. And our veterans will be able to spot raw talent to recruit to their clans.

To get you started we will gift you with Double Prowess points during the whole event. Moreover, we have arranged a series of dynamic happenings that will start with a Treasure Hunt event and will continue at a later date with GM controlled monsters on the spot.

Community Talk: State of Agon episode #1

DFUW Players have come together and decided to create a new "talk show" series about Darkfall's current affairs.

Enjoy the first episode titled "State of Agon".

One of the strength of Indie games/developer is that they are small, efficient, accessible, and they can take chances with many types of experiment to become innovative. 

I have personally conversed with the developers of Darkfall many times, which is unimaginable for most big studio games. 

Indie project also have their fair share of issues mostly lack of resources, missing deadline, slow to patch games. Good thing is they are more open to criticism and they are more willing to listen to the player base and act accordingly.  Player can have a much bigger impact and say on the direction of the game design etc.

Major resistance against the SUN empire

Sun suffered a major loss as resistance steps up attack.

Darkfall EU server was in the brink of extinction when a powerful conquest centric clan called SUN was taking over majority of the holdings to increase their area of influence. Eventually many small clans put their differences aside and united to fight Sun which they see it as the "Evil Empire".

Here is a video of SUN's loosing their main holding Mar'shral, the city also known as the "crown jewel of Agon" which was completely destroyed and taken over by the resistance forces.

SUN leadership do acknowledge the  growing menace of the latest resistance forces who are getting bolder day by day, but they view these defeats as a minor set back.  SUN leadership is totally committed to protect sovereignty of their lands and holding.  SUN is planning a full blown retaliatory strike to take back their holdings with the intention to the crush the ever growing resistance into oblivion.

Skynet User Network (S.U.N.) has been challenged... 

The year is 2014. Not much of Agon remains intact. It's been almost a year since the machines took control of the land, wiping out much of what remained of life. Their relentless efforts to wipe out all the races of Agon forced pockets of survivors to scatter across the lands. Every once in a while, somebody would mount an attack against a fortress or citadel of S.U.N. but every time, the machines always had far too many and the attacks were but a scratch on the network itself.

April 22nd marks the first real strike against the machines. After a 5 hour battle accounting for thousands of lives lost, both robotic and human, their Alberworth mainframe was destroyed and seized by the resistance. Word quickly spread across the land and the scattered survivors are finally rallying to fight back. Within hours of the win at Alberworth, a chain reaction of attacks took place all across Agon, starting with the Zaghuroth mainframe.

..The War Against the Machines has officially begun.

Now is the time for all those who have spent their days hiding in fear of S.U.N. to emerge and fight, to reclaim their land and restore balance to the world. There's no telling how long this will take, but be sure to act now and be involved, one way or another. You can make a difference.

We have acquired one of the machines ourselves. We've hijacked their Gentleman Yolo vessel and now it fights for us. When Agon was destroyed the first time, we barely managed to salvage the mind of the greatest fighter that world had ever known. It has been preserved for years in its young state, but now we've successfully uploaded this mind into the Gentleman Yolo machine. Our new T-800 still has nothing on the S.U.N. T-1000 model, known as Fenix, but it's all we have right now and it's proving effective.

Everyone predicted the fall of the empire. They all said it would come one day. Well that time is now. Whatever side of history you choose to be on, choose now, because the future might turn out different than you expect. It's a future you should want to be a part of.

Visting Aventurine HQ in Greece to meet the Darkfall team.

One of our good friend might have an opportunity in future to visit Aventurine HQ in Greece and meet up with the Darkfall team!  I am preparing some questions in advance!


Here are some questions I have for Darkfall team @ AV :-)

Questions from Jane:

  1. Any plans to update the art/style of ?
  2. Any plans of releasing a fan site kit/press kit?  Basically many game developers offers artwork and "skin" so clan website, fan site,blogs can have "Darkfall" Look N Feel.   Here is an example of GW2 fan site kit.
  3. Many players feels Darkfall is about survival of the fittest. They feel that if player is an older game or not good at twitch skills then this game is not for them.  Is there room for thousands of these players who falls under this "normal/mmorpg player" category to still enjoy the game?
  4. One of the common request is to market/advertise this game because 99% of the gamers are not aware of this amazing game.  What are your plans of increasing awareness of this game?

  1. Recently I read your vision and I am very excited about your many upcoming changes.  However, I was disappointed that I didn't find too much about client performance "vision".  Many people feel the game demanding hardware wise.  What are your plans for performance and supporting multi core CPUs, SLI, latest Direct X, etc. 
  2. I have friends who wants to be game developer who have recently graduated and working on mini project.  Do you have any internship opportunity?
  3. The Asian (Japanese) version of Darkfall website has a nice little section to show the progress of each faction in the server war.  Any plans of either having the live map available over the web or some conquest data outside the game for people to watch, track their server for NA/EU?
  4. Sometime we see AV patching and talking on the forums/in-game at 4:00 AM Greece local time. Do you have Night Elves in your team? 
  5. We loved the tournament Arena.  What other "tools" are you planning to introduce to allow players and GM to host more events? 
  6. Any possibility of  having a roaming/flying dragon that drops chaos chest from sky? Maybe people will trace the trail of this dragon to hunt of treasure and natural roaming "PvP" will happen? How how random roaming monsters/giants on land?

        Darkfall Unholy Wars new territory featues explained.

        Darkfall is a territory control game where clans compete against each other to capture cities, hamlet, villages, and sea towers.  When clan captures multiple holding in the same area they all get connected by "Area of Influence" or AoI.  When clan members are inside AoI they get the benefit of extra income, prowess, gold, loots.  The game is geared toward Kingdom building and large scale battles.  Darkfall has the largest non instanced map of any MMORPG in the market.

        Territories & Regions

        All clan territorial objects (cities, hamlets, villages and fortresses) in the world have had a territory painted around them; clans that capture the territorial object now also own the territory around it; Resulting in 108 individual territories throughout Agon; 50 city/hamlet territories, 56 village territories and 2 sea-fortress territories.

        Ownership of that territory provides clan members with a set of bonuses related to activities they perform within their territories. These bonuses affect prowess gains, loot quality from harvesting and loot quantity from killing monsters. Each territory provides the same bonus types, in different quantities, as follows:

        Prowess Gain Increase +1.5% +2.5% +5% +10%
        Chance of 'Rare' Harvesting Loot Increase +0.5% +1.5% +2.5% +5%
        Monster Loot Increase +1.5% +2.5% +5% +10%
        Gold Increase for Monster Loot +2.5% +5% +10% +20%

        Members of clans allied to the clan that owns the territory will receive the same bonuses to activities in that territory, at 50% of the magnitude that members of the owner clan would receive.

        When a single clan owns two, or more, neighbouring territories (territories that share a common border), these territories effectively merge into a single “region”. Bonuses from each territory in a region stack (sum) and are effective throughout the total combined area of the region; for both members of the owner clan, and members of allied clans.

        Clans are still free to own separate territories (or even multiple, disconnected regions), but the bonuses from each territory/region will be isolated to those territories/regions and will not combine with bonuses from other disconnected territories/regions.

        Territorial ownership, and political relationships, can be seen by all players, from the world-map (see below). Additionally, when a player enters a territory or region owned by a clan, they will receive a message indicating whose territory they have entered, and if they are welcome there or not; notifications that players have entered their territory are not shown to members of the owner clan.

        Darkfall vision, direction, and immediate plans released

        Vision, direction, and immediate plans



        Today with this communication we hope to make the community a part of our vision, direction and immediate development plans for Darkfall Unholy Wars.

        Direction is a critical issue for the game and the development team, and it has been a hotly debated topic within the community. Compromises have been made along the way; however we are committed to our original vision of a politically and economically driven sandbox PvP MMO, where risk dictates the reward, leading to meaningful massive battles. Sandbox is part of our culture and, to us, it’s the essence of gaming, rather than a current industry trend.

        To realign with our vision, we have evolved our internal structure and workflow, and we have our development strategy to guide us back on track. We are also committed to our interaction and communication with the community since our players are an integral part of our vision.

        To that end, we are pleased to present the major features from our next few updates:

        Custom Roles

        Drawing from Darkfall’s heritage we are introducing custom roles. Players can mix and match skills, boosters, and perks, to fully customize their combat role, enhancing sandbox character development. Armor sits on top of the whole system, affecting different skills in different ways, but blocking none. The endless combinations promote player freedom and the open ended experience. The introduction of Custom roles is our highest priority; expect to see them in game very soon.

        Economy Rebalance

        The driving force behind meaningful conflict and combat is a robust economy. We have been going over every monster, resource node and recipe. Additionally, new higher tier tools as well as special nodes are being introduced, along with more variation in recipes. These changes are coming in waves; expect to see them in most of our upcoming patches. The next step in the economy rebalance is enchanting; once custom roles are launched, enchanting will follow.

        Siege Engines

        A highly requested feature, siege engines have been on our backlog for a while. Proper catapults, siege towers, battering rams and siege ladders are in the works and their introduction will change the face of sieging. These engines are driven across terrain, and need to be positioned properly following a realistic medieval approach to their design and operation. This feature, currently in the design pipeline, will become our development focus right after custom roles have been implemented.

        Quest System

        Aimed mainly at improving our new player experience, quests will also provide content for all players. Darkfall lore is reintroduced through engaging storylines to help new players learn the ropes and explore the world. For experienced players, quests offer meaningful rewards like unlockable perks. This is a resource demanding system we’re already working on, so we’ll keep you updated on its progress.

        These four systems are our major development goals, along with various other smaller ones, such as improvements to the feel and responsiveness of combat, additional improvements to the new player experience, and more. Overall, we aim to move away from features that are not consistent with our sandbox vision. A very specific example: we are rethinking timed events and the purpose of safe zones, and we are experimenting with meaningful alignment system setups.

        As a philosophy, we will always challenge our development decisions against our sandbox strategy and decisively move forward with making Darkfall the game it’s meant to be.

        Burning Embers Rumble Tournament FINALS "the unforgettable"

        Burning Embers Rumble was organized by the developers of Darkfall from Aventurine S.A. The tourney lasted for seven days (Saturday April 05 - Saturday April 12) with four bouts every day. Battles took place from 17:00-21:00 GMT for the EU server, and 23:00-03:00 GMT for the NA server.

        World top 64 FPS MMORPG #eSports warriors from EU and North American server participated. Here was the EU and NA tournament brackets.  It is now my pleasure to link you the finale of this ultra competitive tournament with a dramatic ending. Thanks to Diana Swift and The Krush for these excellent video that were recorded over last 7 days.         Territory Control
        In our upcoming patch, Darkfall Unholy Wars takes a massive step towards the endgame via exciting new territory-control features, as we refocus

        on our sandbox PvP and massive-battles heritage.
        Check out our new video and find out how territory control is changing the face of the game.
        Territory ownership taps into Darkfall Unholy Wars' strategic and political potential and will be the driving force of massive battles to gain control over highly contested areas. These sandbox features are based on the implementation of large, complex, scalable systems we will continuously expand on. Your feedback on the territory ownership features is extremely valuable to us and we are committed to reacting swiftly to your reports to make any necessary adjustments and improvements.

        You have caught glimpses of them in our Facebook posts and our developers have shared some details about how they

        work. Essentially, this is the basis of the whole territory control system. All control points that can be captured (holdings, villages and sea

        fortresses) have an area attached to them and the clan that owns the control point is considered the owner of the area of influence around it as well. On

        its own, this system offers a visual element to the map so that anyone can have an overview of what and how many territories are owned by which clans. Its

        true potential lies in the features that are tied to it.

        Area Bonuses
        Each area offers a set of buffs to clan members and allies of the owning clan, who operate within the area of influence. These buffs have to do with

        prowess generation rates, rare item drop chances from harvesting and monster-killing as well as gold generation. These buffs stack in the case of connected

        areas, so expanding your territory by conquering neighboring ones will yield the best results.

        A form of taxation on generated resources in a clan's area of influence is another feature that next week's patch brings.
        Resources generated in an area will also fill up the levy collector of that area. While this is a taxation mechanic conceptually, no resources are

        actually deprived from the harvester or monster-killer. Instead, there is a chance for extra resources to be generated and placed in the levy collector

        Normal harvesting and monster-killing, as well as village requisitioning are actions that generate these extra resources at this point. While filling up,

        the collector cannot be interacted with by anyone. It's important to note here that while the Levy collector building is close to a clan holding (cities

        and hamlets), it does not technically belong to it.
        Because of this it cannot be damaged and it does not need to be built like other clan buildings. Once it is full with resources, the structure becomes

        available for requisitioning. The requisitioning mechanic is exactly the same as the one that is used for villages. The same rules apply and you will still

        need a requisitioning gauntlet as well as globules of greed. The fill progress of all levy collectors is displayed on the map for all to see but since it

        is player activity based, there is no timer.

        We have also shared images of the new feat window. Redesigning this element is part of an ongoing process of improving our GUI elements with availability

        of information and intuitiveness in mind. Additionally we are introducing a first round of PvE repeatable feats to serve as daily and weekly goals for

        players of all experience levels.
